# Japan Re-entry Deadline Check

> Free, unofficial checker for the last day a foreign resident who leaves Japan must be back so their status of residence does not lapse. Covers the deemed re-entry permit (みなし再入国許可, Immigration Control Act art. 26-2), regular re-entry permits (art. 26), the 2-month special period while an extension or change of status is pending (art. 20(6)), special permanent residents (2 years) and statuses that get no deemed re-entry. ## Key facts (official sources below)
- Deemed re-entry: residents with a valid passport (and residence card) who tick the box on the re-entry ED card at departure. Return within 1 year of departure, or by the period-of-stay expiry if earlier. Special permanent residents: 2 years.
- Deemed re-entry CANNOT be extended abroad (art. 26-2(3)). Miss it and the status of residence (including permanent residence) ends.
- Not available to: temporary visitors (短期滞在), periods of stay of 3 months or less, Designated Activities for pending refugee applicants, people in revocation/deportation procedures, persons designated by the Minister.
- Renewal or change pending past expiry (special period, art. 20(6)): may stay until the decision or 2 months after the old expiry, whichever first. Leaving on deemed re-entry: return by the earlier of 1 year from departure or expiry + 2 months, and receive the decision at the immigration office before the 2 months end (ISA Q&A).
- Regular re-entry permit: up to 5 years (SPR 6) within the period of stay; single ¥4,000 / multiple ¥7,000 at the counter (online ¥3,500 / ¥6,500). Can be extended at a Japanese embassy by up to 1 year, max 6 years from when it took effect (art. 26(5)).
- Date counting: departure day not counted. Leave 2026-10-24 → back by 2027-10-24. Expiry 2026-12-30 + 2 months → 2027-02-28.
